More Bullshit From Mastercard When It Comes To Tobacco
TweetYou might remember a year ago, almost to the day I made a post called Bullshit From Mastercard When It Comes To Tobacco. Well it looks like the PC stupid ass company is up to it again. It always starts out with the little guys and moves up.
I received an email from Todays Cigar. You probably know of this company, they are a one day deal site for 5-packs. The same company that had a hell of a time even finding a credit card processor that would even work with them. Well until I saved the day…… OK I just connected them with another online BOTL that shared information on processor companies but like to pat myself on the back (you know, I never received a thank you or sampler for helping them out, hmmm).
In any case, here is the skinny from the email:
Effective January 1, 2010, TodaysCigar.com will no longer be accepting MasterCard as a payment option. We’re very sorry to those customers that currently purchase our daily offerings with MasterCard credit cards, but new rules set forth by MasterCard to our merchant services provider have made it impossible for us to continue using MasterCard. It is unfortunate to see the credit card companies taking such a negative stance on online tobacco sales, simply because of the dishonest practices of a few bad eggs. You can read more about this issue here: http://bit.ly/7gTGBn . We hope to see you back soon.
It seems that Mastercard is singling out online tobacco retailers and charging them an extra $5-$15 per transaction. Yea, you read that right $5 to $15 per transaction if your online tobacco sales are more than 1% of your sales. That is PC, bullshit, screwed up, fucked up and just plain wrong.
I do ask you to contact mastercard on this issue but I’m sure it will not do much. If you have not noticed, what Americans want means nothing these days, only what the crazy people wants.

For what it’s worth, it’s not just the crazy left involved here. There’s plenty of people on the crazy right (read evangelical Christians) who consider tobacco to be the devil’s weed and quietly champion these same causes. They’re not as vocal because they don’t want the association with the other fringe of society.
Lots of folks on both sides of the political aisle want to tell us what we can and cannot do. The crazy right want to dictate who you can marry or whether a woman can make her own personal reproductive choices. I despise the tobacco nazis as much as the next guy, but let’s avoid painting with a politically broad brush, please!
@Oxman
Point taken and you are correct. Both sides have been infringing on our personal rights, especially the past couple of years. I do have my political views and they do leak out some times here but I try to keep things as much political free here as possible not taking into account tobacco laws of course.
I do find it hard to believe that any right wing group would support the government involvement into anything like this besides abortions. We will not go there because it sounds like we might be on opposing sides with that issue and this is no place for it.
Thanks for the comment and I retract my statement the crazy left and will reword it to crazy people. I think we can agree to that.
If you have MC…why not just drop them and sign up with visa or AE or any other credit card?
Let your business do the talking, as long as we have free market and CC company options…let your voice (Wallet) be heard.
@aaron
I wish it were that easy for me. My bank that my wife and I have dealt with from day one uses MC on the debit cards. It is not that easy to just change banks. Paypal also goes through MC.
Credit cards on the other hand can be canceled easily, my one only CC is a Visa. Maybe I should go back to carrying cash so I would not need to use it at all.
