Me and my wife went to Hocking Hills for our five year anniversary and stayed at a unique place called Ravenwood Castle. Since we had a great time I wanted to do a review on this vacation get-a-way.
Hocking Hills is located about three hours north of Cincinnati and is way off the highway. We had miles and miles of country roads that was nice since we had the Camaro with the T-tops out. We did not see any but seen a lot of signs for the horse and buggy. Ohio is known for a lot of Amish population.
We stayed at a place called Ravenwood Castle. This is a unique romantic place good for couples wanting a quiet weekend. They have no T.V. or alarm clocks in the rooms and they had a bottle of wine in ice waiting for us. We got the King Alfred The Great Room with a king bed, gas fire place and a whirlpool tub. The castle itself if very cool with a huge dinning area. Our room was next to the kitchen so it was a little noisy until after dinner but after that it was very quiet with no noise. If the castle rooms are not for you they had small cottages in the back. We didn’t get to see the inside but we were told they are updated and they do have T.V.’s in them. We seen a lot of cabin rentals around and many camp sites, most of the state parks also had camping. Dinner is served at 7pm and is $25. The help is dressed as servants serving you.
I was surprised to find out that even though there is state parks most things are miles apart from each other so plan to do some driving. We found out quickly the drive was worth it for what was offered. We drove in on Friday and hung out on the grounds at the castle. Saturday we went on a train ride. The cost was $11 and the ride was was 1 hour and 45 minutes which includes a 30 minute stop in a small town with a lot of old cabins. The cabins were being put to use with volunteers dressed and working the land.
We found that all of the many state parks we stopped at were free. One had a big lake with swimming and fishing, you could rent a boat or fish off land. The rest of the parks we went to had so many beautiful sites, rock formations and waterfalls to keep you busy for ever. This place is a hidden treasure for hikers (Yes, I was hiking with a cigar in hand!). The last day on our way out we stopped by a ranch and did some horseback riding, the ride was great and the people at Happy Trails were great.
This is a great small town to visit for a romantic weekend trip or for hikers and hunters. Next time we will be a little more prepared with fishing poles and hiking gear. There is so many rock formations we didn’t get to see that I’m sure it will take many trips to get them all in.
Looking to do a little travel and need a hotel, flight, car or even a cruise? Try a new site called www.mstravelandcruise.com. I would not normally suggest a travel company but my cousin Mike is a loyal guy that will work hard for you.
I will fix the pictures when I get home later this week. They are of some of the things we did this weekend.
