Where To Buy Cigars

If you have been enjoying hand rolled cigars for a while, you probably have your “go to” place to get your stogies. But for the new people to this hobby, they might find it hard to figure out who they can trust, who has the best deals and even, what to get. Here we will go over a couple trusted ways where you can buy cigars.

When deciding where you want to pick your smokes up at, there are a couple things you need to think about. I’m sure in once you have been in this hobby for a while, you will have a list of places you like depending on what you want.

The first place we will go over is small tobacco stores. Some of these places are good but many are known to over humidify. They don’t do this on purpose but most of the time their expertise is cigarettes, not cigars. You will usually find a small selection that are overpriced. It is worth checking out your local tobacco shop in case you have no other choice one day. Who knows, the owner just might be a BOTL and have a nice set up.

The next type of place is a local cigar shop/club. Many times, you will find a nice walk in humidor with a lot of cigar toys around. Most of these places has a relaxed atmosphere with large chairs, pool tables and some even have drinks that can be purchased. The prices at these types of places usually are higher than usual. The up side that is cigar shops/clubs invite you to stay, hang out and chat with other cigar lovers while you enjoy yours. And you have access to a knowledgeable staff that can help you find new cigars you will like. You are also supporting a local business and the cigar industry in your town. Many, including myself don’t mind paying a little extra for that.

The other most common place to buy cigars is online. This is where it can get a little tricky but can also pay off if you are looking for a good deal. The first thing you need to know is that the company you are dealing with can be trusted. You are buying cigars from a place where you can not pick them up and check them out. You want to make sure when you Buy Premium Cigars online, you want to make sure that you are getting correctly humidified stogies in good shape. For that reason, you want to do some research on cigar forums. If you find a place you are thinking about buying from, do a quick Google search on that company and you should be able to find if they are a good outfit.

Like said above, your choice will depend on the day. If you are out and have some time to spend, I would suggest finding a local cigar shop to relax and meet other BOTL’s. If you are looking for a deal or to stock up your humidor, I would suggest buying them online. Either way you go, soon you will have your own list of “go to” places and be on your way to being forced to purchase a bigger humidor.

Cigar Sizes

The debate among cigar smokers has been heated for a long time as per the size and shape of a cigar and its direct effect on the taste. Cigars are known to come in varied shapes and sizes, and the preferences of individuals don’t just vary on the size and shape factor. The time you have to relax with a cigar and smoke it start to finish, as well as the comfort with which you can smoke it matters a lot. But if one talks of the contour of a cigar, it matters whether or not a cigar is filled or unfilled. Since there are so many kinds available, you might come across cigars that don’t produce enough smoke, or pass too much of it for you to hold the cigar since it becomes hot.

If the cigar is packed too tightly, its likely you wont be able to get smoke through it. In this case, the ring gauge matters a lot. Cigars that come with bigger ring gauges are a lot tougher to roll than those with a narrow one. However, that’s not to say all manufacturers have mastered how to roll a narrower one either. Some smaller cigars are sometimes very inconsistent in flavor and smoke than the bigger ones, since there’s less of a space to inhale and the gauge is often presented with a skewed perspective. Wider cigars may thus be harder to light but if you look hard enough for a good blend you’re bound to find one to fit your tastes.

On the other hand, some people avoid buying larger cigars because of its ability to put across too much of the harsh blend. The flavor profile is bound to be a bit overbearing for some with milder preferences. There is also an increased amount of smoke which may not be preferable by all. We believe its easier to gauge out the different sizes and find out which suits your tastes the best, rather than sticking to one because you’ve heard a few negative factors about others. The cigar is an acquired taste and if you can handle the lucid flavor of the larger cigars, the experience is quite enjoyable.

With smaller cigars, you have more of a concentrated nicotine buzz and will enjoy it all the more if you have a given amount of time to finish it in. Comfort is one of the biggest factors as per the size and shape of the cigar. There are several available, starting from straight, cascading cigars to those rounded in the middle. Each shape is meant to bring something new to the table, thus it is important to do your research before you enter the market for a good cigar. The shape also matters because it defines how fast the cigar is going to burn out. The temperature is another factor, a cigar is likely to become hotter and hotter as you come close to finishing it off, but if you opt for a cigar that’s rounded in the middle it will remain cooler.

Flavor infused cigars are a great way to add some variety to your smoking. From bourbon and vanilla to chocolate and cherry, there are a wide array of flavors to chose from. While store bought infused cigars can be great, many of them tend to be low quality cigars with an added flavoring to mask the machine processed, low quality tobacco it is made from. The world of flavor infused cigars deserves a more respectible shot with higher quality cigars in order to truly judge and appreciate this kind of smoke. Below is a simple and easy guide to help you create your own high quality flavored cigars.

Step 1: Pick What Flavor You Want
Choosing what flavor you want to infuse into a cigar is the first, and most important step in flavoring a cigar. This will determine the type of cigar you will use. You will need a flavor that can either be found in liquid form, or be made into a liquid form. Some great examples are liquors such as whiskey and rum, vanilla, cherry, and wine. A surprisingly delicious option is barbecue flavored cigars for smoking with a nice brisket.

Step 2: Pick Your Cigar
Just like pairing wine with food, there is a right cigar for every flavor. This take some experimentation to really meld the nuances of a cigar with a specific flavor. As a general rule, smooth and buttery cigars go great with most kinds of fruit flavors for a nice beach cigar. Deeper and rich cigars go great with rum and whiskey flavored cigars. You want to make sure to have a cigar that is nice and tight, while is still fresh.

Step 3: Prepare The Flavor Pad
Some people use paper towel squares for this, but I prefer using ultra-absorbant cotton pads because they can soak up more flavorant. You can commonly find these at the local pharmacy near the bandaid section. Cut the cotton pads into small, 1.5 inch squares, one for each cigar you will be flavoring. Soak each square into the flavorant you are using. For a more unique smoke, start mixing flavors once you get the hang of things. Mixing a great cigar with a few of someone’s favorite flavors can be a personal and perfect gift for a cigar lover.

Step 4: Store Your Cigar
The final step is to store your cigar along side the flavoring pad. Add your cigar to a medium sized freezer bag along with the cotton pad. Take special note to not let the cigar and the flavor pad come into direct contact- the flavors should be absorbed into the cigar. The easiest way to insure they don’t touch is to simply separate the two with some bunched up tissues. Once this is done, mark the bag indicating what cigar and flavors were used, so you can go back and hone your cigar infusing recipes. From here, simply store in a cigar humidor for a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how strong the flavor pad is.

There you have it, a simple but effective way to flavor your own cigars. The fun comes in when you start experimenting with new combinations and tastes. What about you? What flavors will you infuse with your cigar?

Cigar aficionados can be picky people, and are very discerning in their tastes about both cigars, and cigar accessories. Luckily, cigar humidors are the perfect way to please even the most discerning and difficult cigar aficionado as you embrace their past time and provide them a great gift for any occasion.

Even better still, instead of just purchasing a cigar humidor, you can do so in a gift set that includes a host of other gifts and goodies to make the cigar lover in your life extremely happy.

Cigar humidor gift sets are a great option for gifts, since they don’t just come with a humidor alone; most gift sets pair the humidor with a host of other cigar accessories to really come full circle for cigar smokers. A cigar cutter, for one, comes with any good humidor gift set. Plus, most gift sets include a caddy bottle of PG solution, a cigar ashtray of high quality, and other calibration and seasoning kits that allow you to ensure your cigars are of the highest quality.

Top cigar humidor gift sets will cost anywhere from $50 to $100, and sometimes more depending on the quality of the model. Realize, though, that major cigar aficionados will want a more significant humidor gift set that can adequately meet their needs, so it may be slightly more expensive for the best quality on the market.

At the end of the day, the best thing about cigar humidor gift sets is that they provide everything you need for the ultimate and complete cigar smoking experience. Nothing will be left out, and because of that, it’s a great option for the seasoned cigar smoker, or the new smoker who is just entering the best years of his or her life.

You can always personalize a cigar humidor with your man’s name engraved on it. Many companies offer this custom detail. Custom gifts say to the recipient that you gave his gift a lot of thought before buying.

You can’t go wrong with any cigar humidor gift set; make sure all include ashtrays, travel tubes, PG solution, and other basic cigar-smoking tools and accessories, but rest assured that a high-quality cigar humidor gift set will be met with love and excitement as a special gift for any occasion!

Over the weekend with nothing to do I figured I would fire up a cigar that I have not had in a long time. The cigar that got me into cigars years ago. The Romeo Y Julieta Tubos picked up from www.truetobacco.com a couple months ago that has been sitting in my humidor just waiting for the perfect night. Well Saturday was that night. Nothing better than a nice crisp night on the back deck, kids in bed and a small fire pit to keep you warm. A nice dark beer and the company of my wife doesn’t hurt the situation either.

This cigar brought back a lot of memories from almost 10 years ago. This was the first handmade cigar I have ever had. During an after party on a business trip, a sales rep broke out a box of cigars as we sat on the beach. Since I have never had a cigar before, I figured I would give one a try and readily accepted his gift, let him cut it and fired up my first cigar. I don’t know if it was the evening or the drinks but it seemed that everything fit just right. I could not believe that I have never tried these before. I was loving life. I have never looked back, picking up a box as soon as I got back from my trip. After going through 4-5 boxes I moved on trying other brands and moving on to more full bodied lines. Over the years I have kind of forgotten about my first smoke until they caught my eye while surfing around.

As I sat on my back deck remembering my trip to Puerto Rico, I fell back in love. This cigar is creamy, relaxing and just the way I remember it.

It is funny how such little things like the small hints of flavor and aroma can bring back memories from long ago. It seems like yesterday that I enjoyed my first cigar, bringing back memories a of a great evening and kind of a dangerous night. I’m sure I have told this story once or twice through the years so I’m not going to go into detail but let’s just say that Puerto Rico after sundown has some crazy things that go on.

In any case, my challenge to you is to go back and try some of the cigars that got you into this hobby. You might think that your taste has evolved but you just might be surprised.

The latest addition to the AVO Heritage series has arrived – AVO Heritage “Special Toro” – produced only in limited quantities. The “Special Toro” is the first AVO cigar to be composed with a 60-ring gauge.

The AVO Heritage “Special Toro” is comprised of specially fermented tobaccos that were hand selected by Avo Uvezian and Hendrik Kelner. The large percentage of Ligero tobaccos creates a spicy, full-bodied cigar with complex flavor and exhilarating palate stimulation. The fillers consist of three different tobaccos: Dominican Ligero, Dominican Seco and Peruvian Seco. The Binder is Dominican San Vicente, while the Wrapper is a specially fermented leaf from Cuban seed, grown in Ecuador – also used on the famed 2009 Limited Edition “Compañero.”

“The AVO Heritage ‘Special Toro’ is a very exciting addition to the AVO brand,” states Scott Kolesaire, AVO Brand Manager. “In response to the requests, we have created the first ever 6” x 60 cigar to bear the AVO name. With an SRP of $9.80 per cigar, ‘Special Toro’ rounds out the AVO Heritage line perfectly, offering a size for everyone, all priced under $10.00.”

Due to the limited amount of AVO Heritage ‘Special Toro’ cigars in production, an initial launch of 1,000 boxes was offered during the IPCPR convention in Orlando, FL Each month additional cigars will be available to Select Merchants nationwide. Packaged in 20 count boxes, ‘Special Toro’ carries a suggested retail price of $196.00, taxes not included.

Just like every other smoker in the U.S., it is becoming harder and harder to find a place to enjoy a fine cigar. The anti-smokers do everything in their power to not only kick you out of indoor public places but they have started an attack on us in our own private areas. At work in many states, you must be 25 feet from any door and when it rain you are stuck enjoying a smoke in the smoking shelter. That is if you are lucky and the company you work for did not adopt a policy to make it as hard as they can on you. Heck, the new Hollywood casinos in Ohio give all employees nicotine test and they will not employ you if you use any kind of tobacco; this includes the occasional premium cigar!

That brings me to the question, where do you get to enjoy your premium cigars? Some get to enjoy them only while driving, others have a wife that allows them to relax in the house. Some people have a man cave, some are stuck out on the back deck and the real lucky ones have a local cigar lounge to hang out at.

My personal situation is on the side of it is very hard for me to able to enjoy a cigar at all these days. To do so I almost have to plan it out. Traveling for a living is okay, it has its pros and cons. I can no longer smoke in my work van that I’m stuck in for 6-8 hours some days. Finding a tobacco friendly hotel anywhere is just about impossible and there is no smoking at all in my house, but that is a rule that my wife and I agree on.

So my options are limited. I can stop on the road and kick back at a rest stop if I’m not in a hurry. I do, do this on occasion if I have all day to travel. It is actually nice if you find a rest area with a walking path. I get to enjoy a stogie on our back deck which is nice. It overlooks the pool and our yard backs up against woods. So I can hang out and watch the boys swim or watch for deer to pop their heads out on the wood line. My one other go to place to enjoy a good smoke is while at a certain casino. I always like to get there a day early and have a relaxing smoke on the banks of Patoka Lake. I of course also have my pole wet as well

Well, that is about the only choices I have these days for the most part. I do sneak in a cigar when I have time but those are my go to places.

Where do you get to smoke your cigars and where are your favorite spots to enjoy them? Leave us a comment and let us know.
