Disney-owned hotels ban smoking

southflorida.com reports that Walt Disney World hotels said Tuesday it is putting out cigarettes and cigars for good in its hotels and time-share buildings starting June 1.

If caught, guests face a steep ‘cleaning fee.’

No more smoking or nonsmoking room options at Walt Disney World hotels. No more foul, secondhand smoke lingering in a room or wafting down a hallway. And no more last, quiet cigarette of the night out on the balcony, under a rising Florida moon.

Disney World said Tuesday it is putting out cigarettes and cigars for good in its hotels and time-share buildings, making it the largest single-site resort complex to take such an action, company officials said. Starting June 1, smoking will be banned in all Disney-owned hotel rooms and time-share rooms, and on their balconies, patios and other areas except designated smoking zones.

I can kinda understand the cigar/cigarette ban inside the rooms (it might cost them additional cleaning fees or potential customers), but out on the balcony? You’re outside, for crying out loud!

I was at a hotel recently with a similar balcony policy. The only thing is I didn’t find out about it until the last night I was there. I had the last laugh, I finished my last cigar just before they called me to tell me about complaints! Even better, my awesome wife told them we hadn’t noticed any smoke.

You don’t want to upset the non smokers and smoke up all the smogged air around them.

About your first point, I think they should have at least 10% or 1 floor (top?) for smokers. Many hotels don’t have balconies anyway. But anyway, how many people sit out on the balcony? Most are out to smoke!

I’m glad you had the last laugh, I wounder if a hotel would have the balls to charge you a “cleaning fee” for smoking outside on the balcony.

You know, I’m not sure about the cleaning fee… I know I didn’t pay one, but I covered my tracks well (and my wife vouched for me :) ). There wasn’t an piece of ash or a butt to be found anywhere on that balcony when I left. I probably left it cleaner than it was when I arrived!

Yeah, especially out on this coast- it was often windy and a bit chilly. If you weren’t out to smoke, you probably weren’t out at all!

[...] was reported a while back that Disney owned hotels banned smoking in all their hotels. I guess they are trying to play both ends since there is big money in cigars. [...]
