Most people know the story behind Consuegra cigars A.K.A Connie but just in case you don’t here it is. Consuegras are some of the only true seconds sent out by cigar factories so therefore can be hard to find because they do not make them on purpose. A “second” is a cigar that did not make the cut for the name brand line to be included in a box you might buy. There is a reason it did not pass on to be a name brand and a lot of times it is hard to see that reason. You might run into a tight draw at times or a bad burn. My experience has been pretty good with them so far and have not had many issues.
Consuegra cigars are seconds of the Villazon factories in Cofradia and Danli, Honduras. They make Punch, Hoyo, Rey del and others that you might get when you buy connies. I made a post a while back that has some consuegra comparisons to Villazon cigars. Along with that you can use cigarcyclopedia to try to figure out what they might be. Keep in mind that it is not complete and you really never know what you will get. It is possible (but unlikely) to get two different cigars in one bundle.
It looks like the Consuegra 574 could be the seconds of the EL Rey Del Mundo Bon Bons and might have been cut at 4 1/2 instead 4 1/4 . The Bon Bons come in tins of 6 and run $10.13 at Lynn Cigars. Since I do not have one to compare these with you really just don’t know.
Country: Honduras
Length/Ring: 4 1/2X36
Wrapper: ?
Strength: Mild
Price: $12.50
Pre-light: It is easy to see why these cigars did not make it with the others to become brand named. Some are darker than others and the cap on some is twice as dark as the main wrapper (wish I had my new camera). Most have some kind of color variation. Besides that they seem to be well made with good construction and a large cap. A sniff gives you a faint/mild tobacco smell and the draw is firm.
The burn: With a small ring smoke you should not run into many issues and these smokes are no different. They have a nice burn line all the way down. The ash is clean with no flakes and is grey/black in color with little puff rings all the way down. The draw was good being a little firm (the way I like it) with plenty of smoke.
The taste: It has a nice mild tobacco flavor that is definitely not a in your face flavorful smoke but pleasant.
Over all: When you are talking about $12.50 for a bundle of 25 cigars on close out at Mikes Cigars you have a pretty low expectation. These surprised me being a good small mild cigar that does not get hot on you. And at 50 cent per cigar you can afford to put her down if your 30 minute break gets cut down to 10. I will buy more before they are gone to keep around for short 30 minute smokes.
